Camp Lejeune, NC - The largest Marine Corps air assault exercise on the east coast took place Tuesday at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. Marines with 2nd Marine Division and 2nd Aircraft Wing conducted Exercise Steel Pike 19. An exercise transporting groups of people on helicopters from one place to another in a hostile landing zone. Officials said it has been more than ten years since an operation of this type and magnitude has been conducted. The operation is different compared to others because it involves multiple agencies and air and ground combat tactics. More than a thousand personnel and 20 aircraft participated in Steel Pike 19. The name has historical significance as it was the name used during an operation in Vietnam.
